Emile Malan

Founder, Vicore Health; Healthcare Advisor for Imperial Logistics Africa Regions

Biography

Emile Malan’s motivation and approach to decision-making is quite simple. Africa has an estimated 25% of the world’s disease burden, yet a mere fraction of the world’s healthcare resources. Anyone who can lend a hand should. Amongst other things, his exposure as a doctor to the full weight and impact of the HIV epidemic in South Africa during the early 2000s, and overburdened healthcare systems in sub-Sahara Africa keeps him motivated to make a difference.

A Johannesburg-based South African who lived in the UK for eight years, he most recently spent six years working across sub-Saharan Africa and Asia in the pharmaceutical industry for GSK.

He has now embarked on a new journey, to focus more directly on broader healthcare and healthcare organizational issues across Africa. In 2018 he founded Vicore Health, a pharmaceutical-industry service and technology provider specializing in Pharmacovigilance, Governance, Regulatory and Medical Affairs solutions. He also consults for various emerging health technology companies (US and South Africa based), contract research organizations as a research physician, and most recently became a Healthcare Advisor for Imperial Logistics Africa Regions.

If asked why he has stopped practicing medicine and serving patients directly, he has a clear conviction that one can serve patients without having to directly treat them. He remains deeply convinced that Africans and their partners must continue to collaborate to address the significant disease burden.

Emile holds a MBChB from the University of Pretoria, South Africa, MBA from Kingston University, a Post Graduate Certificate in Healthcare Leadership from the University of Exeter and became an Archbishop Desmond Tutu Fellow in 2016.
